In South America there are two main types of pigeons that are hunted, the Picazuro Pigeon (grand pigeon), and the Spotted Pigeon. The quantity of Pigeon is not as great as the Dove; however they present the same problems with crop destruction. The pigeons can be equally destructive to the farmer’s harvest, because what they lack in numbers compared to the dove, they more than make up for it with their voracious appetites.
Pigeon hunting is normally done over decoys, with blinds set up strategically in the fields. Pigeons present some unique challenges compared to the dove as they spook easier, fly more erratically and less predictably, and fly faster. Properly placed decoys and good cover will bring the pigeons in close enough for you to target. Pigeons make for a fantastic and challenging hunt. Depending on feeding patterns, location of roost and time of harvest you may also have the opportunity to pass shoot pigeons on the way to and from their feeding grounds. Pass Shooting often is more fun than shooting decoyed pigeons as their flight patterns are dramatically different, the pigeons fly higher and faster. In this environment it’s a good idea to tighten up your chokes and brush up on your long shots!
There is no federal limit on pigeons in Argentina; however each outfitter imposes a limit between 100 and 300 birds per day. Much like Dove, Pigeons can be hunted year around as there are no off seasons for their harvest; however the best months to hunt are May through September.
Many clients chose a combination hunt and hunt/fish one or more different species while in South America. This is highly encouraged as its likely you will reach your outfitter imposed limit in several hours of hot barreled shooting.
