How to get there - Flights daily from Phoenix and Mexico City
Most passionate dove hunters are well aware of the hunting opportunities that are available in Argentina, but few know about the excellent dove shooting in Western Mexico. Southern Outfitting has partnered with outfitter David Artee and we now offer the finest dove shooting in Mexico available.
Some may argue that the bird population isn’t as voluminous when compared to high volume dove areas found in Argentina, however most clients who have hunted in the Sonora area believe the overall hunting experience in Mexico is equal. The two obvious advantages to dove hunting in Western Mexico are the shorter travel times from your home in the US, and the less expensive airfare. Another bonus to dove hunting in Mexico is the White-Wing dove.
Ciudad de Obregon is located approximately 450 miles south of Phoenix in the state of Sonora. Obregon is a city of 500,000 with an abundance of agriculture just miles from the center of town. Its location nestled in Sierra Madre Occidental valley allows hunters the unique ability to drive just a few minutes out of the city to fields, and then back into the city for lunch/dinner. Because Obregon is a fair sized city everything you could possibly need is just minutes away from you, including hospital, convenience stores, restaurants and bar/lounges.
Unlike Argentina, Mexico has hunting seasons for dove, because of this nearly every Mexican hunting operation elects to use Hotels instead of lodges dedicated to hunting. In Obregon we use the Valle Grande hotel which is very accommodating, hunter friendly and conveniently located. The dove hunting season in Obregon starts the third week of October and runs through the first week of March
We hunt areas just outside of Ciudad de Obregon, typically over wheat, sorghum or corn fields. David and his staff scout the fields several times a week to determine the roosting and flight patterns of the dove to ensure plenty of activity for each hunter. It is common for hunters to shoot 200-300 birds in the morning, and 150-200 in the afternoon. Depending on the time of year and hunting area, 20-25% of your doves will be the larger and robust white-wing. In general you will find that the doves in Mexico will fly less predictably and more erratically when compared to the Argentine doves. Hunters that have 70-75% shot to kill averages in Córdoba will likely have 45-50% averages in Obregon.
Southern Outfitting must dispel to two common myths about hunting in Mexico. Rumors are rampant about Mexico not being safe. Certainly there are areas of Mexico (as in the US) that are not safe. Obregon and the surrounding areas are quiet farming towns far removed from drug trafficking and gangs that center around the US/Mexico border. Obregon is more than 6 hour drive from the border town Nogales which is heard about frequently in the news. Another issue that is talked about negatively is the inability to bring shotguns into Mexico. With the proper paperwork completed 30 days in advance it is actually as easy to bring your shotguns to Mexico as it is to Argentina.
Mexico is a fun filled alternative to Argentina for dove hunting. Please consider Obregon through Southern Outfitting this hunting season!
